A knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. It is predominantly used in maritime and aviation navigation. Because a nautical mile (based on the circumference of the Earth) is slightly longer than a standard land mile, 1 knot is equivalent to about 1.15 mph.
To convert kilometers per hour to meters per second, you divide the speed value by 3.6. For example, 36 km/h divided by 3.6 equals exactly 10 m/s.
The speed of sound in dry air at 20°C (68°F) is approximately 343 meters per second. In other units, this is roughly 1,235 km/h or 767 mph. When an aircraft travels faster than this speed, it breaks the sound barrier.
