Why isn't the Maximum Resolution (HD) thumbnail showing?

YouTube only generates the "MaxRes" (1280x720 or 1920x1080) thumbnail if the creator originally uploaded the video in 720p HD or higher. If the video is very old or was uploaded in standard definition (480p), the HD thumbnail will not exist. In these cases, use the "High Quality" button instead.

What is the ideal YouTube thumbnail size?
