Using the wrong video dimensions can ruin your content. If your aspect ratio doesn't match the platform, your video will be forced into black bars (letterboxing) or aggressively cropped, hiding important text. Use our calculator above, or reference this quick guide for optimal sizes:
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a video's width and its height. It is written as Width:Height (like 16:9). It does not dictate the actual physical size in pixels, just the shape. A 1920x1080 video and a 1280x720 video both share the exact same 16:9 aspect ratio.
You cannot easily convert a horizontal video (16:9) to a vertical video (9:16) without either severely cropping the sides or adding massive black bars to the top and bottom. Most creators use video editing software (like Premiere Pro or CapCut) to center the subject and crop out the left and right edges.
If your video isn't exactly in a 9:16 ratio (1080 x 1920), TikTok will compress and resize it, causing a loss in quality. Furthermore, exporting your video in 4K for TikTok is usually a mistake, as the app aggressively downscales files over 1080p. Stick to 1080x1920 for the crispest results.
