An Aspect Ratio is the proportional relationship between the width and height of an image, video, or physical screen. It is typically written as two numbers separated by a colon, such as 16:9.
Understanding your aspect ratio is crucial when buying a new PC monitor, resizing an image for social media, or rendering a video to ensure it doesn't get stretched, squished, or ruined by massive black bars.
To find the aspect ratio, you divide the width and the height by their Greatest Common Divisor (GCD). For example, the GCD of 1920 and 1080 is 120. When you divide 1920 by 120, you get 16. When you divide 1080 by 120, you get 9. Therefore, the ratio is 16:9. Our calculator does this complex math for you instantly.
A decimal ratio is found by simply dividing the width by the height (e.g., 1920 ÷ 1080 = 1.778). This is often used in the film industry to describe aspect ratios. For example, a 16:9 screen is often referred to as a 1.77:1 display.
Most modern cinematic movies are filmed in an ultrawide format, specifically a decimal ratio of 2.35:1 or 2.39:1. Because a standard TV or monitor is 16:9 (1.77:1), the screen is not wide enough to fit the movie. To prevent the image from being squished, video players add black bars to the top and bottom of the screen (letterboxing).
