How is RAM Bandwidth Calculated?

Your RAM's bandwidth is the maximum amount of data it can read or write per second. Understanding this number helps explain why a Dual Channel memory setup is so much faster for gaming and productivity than a Single Channel setup.

The standard formula to calculate memory bandwidth is:

Bandwidth = Memory Speed (MT/s) × Bus Width (8 Bytes) × Number of Channels

  1. Memory Speed: Look at the advertised speed on your RAM box (e.g., DDR4-3200 or DDR5-6000).
  2. Bus Width: Standard consumer PC memory uses a 64-bit bus per channel, which translates to exactly 8 Bytes.

Why do people say MT/s instead of MHz?

DDR stands for Double Data Rate. A DDR4-3200 RAM stick actually runs at a physical clock speed of 1600 MHz, but it transfers data twice per clock cycle (1600 × 2 = 3200). Therefore, the technically correct term is 3200 MT/s (Megatransfers per second), though many manufacturers and software still incorrectly label it as MHz.
