Mbps (Megabits per second) uses a lowercase "b" and is used to measure network bandwidth. MB/s (Megabytes per second) uses an uppercase "B" and measures file size transfer rates. Because there are exactly 8 bits in 1 byte, you must divide your Mbps speed by 8 to find your true MB/s download speed.
A "Gigabit" connection is 1,000 Mbps. If we divide that by 8, the absolute theoretical maximum download speed of a 1 Gbps connection is 125 Megabytes per second (MB/s). Due to network overhead, you will typically see real-world downloads peak around 110 to 115 MB/s.
Historically, hardware data transmission over wires has always been measured one "bit" (a single 1 or 0) at a time, so network engineers used bits per second. Today, ISPs continue to use Mbps and Gbps because the numbers look 8 times larger, making them much better for marketing to consumers.
