Planning a road trip or trying to budget your daily commute? Our Free Fuel Cost Calculator makes it incredibly easy to estimate exactly how much money you will spend on gas or petrol.
The standard formula used to determine fuel cost relies on three variables:
Our tool automatically adjusts this formula whether you are using the US Imperial system (Miles, MPG, and Gallons) or Metric systems (Kilometers, km/L, or L/100km), ensuring precise results anywhere in the world.
You can usually find your car's estimated MPG (Miles Per Gallon) or L/100km (Liters per 100 Kilometers) on the dashboard digital display. Alternatively, you can search for your specific vehicle make, model, and year online (e.g., via the EPA's fuel economy website in the US) to find the manufacturer's official estimates.
Estimators use a constant average for fuel efficiency. In reality, your fuel economy changes dynamically based on traffic conditions, idling time, driving speed, air conditioning usage, and whether you are driving on a highway or in a city. Fuel prices can also vary widely between gas stations along your route.
Both are metric measurements for fuel efficiency, but they work oppositely. km/L (Kilometers per Liter) tells you how far you can drive on a single liter of fuel (higher is better). L/100km (Liters per 100 Kilometers) tells you how much fuel you burn to travel 100 kilometers (lower is better).
