Human sleep isn't a flat line. While we sleep, our brains cycle through five different stages, moving from light sleep to deep sleep, and finally into REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. One complete cycle takes an average of 90 minutes.
If your alarm clock goes off while you are in the middle of deep sleep, you will experience "sleep inertia"βthat heavy, groggy feeling that takes hours to shake off. However, if you wake up at the end of a complete cycle, you will feel naturally alert and refreshed.

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement. It is the final stage of a sleep cycle where dreaming occurs and your brain processes and stores memories. Waking up during REM or deep sleep causes grogginess, which is why timing your sleep cycles is so important.
While 90 minutes is the clinical average, individual sleep cycles can vary slightly (typically between 90 and 110 minutes). However, using the 90-minute baseline is the most scientifically reliable way to estimate your optimal wake times without using medical brain-wave monitoring.
If you don't have time for a full 90-minute sleep cycle, aim for a 20 to 25-minute power nap. This keeps you in the "light sleep" stages, allowing you to wake up feeling energized without slipping into deep sleep and waking up groggy.
