An Ideal Body Weight (IBW) Calculator estimates the optimal weight for your height and gender based on standard medical formulas. Originally developed in the mid-20th century to calculate exact medication dosages for patients, these formulas have since become widely used as a general benchmark for health, fitness, and nutrition goals.
It's important to remember that there is no single "perfect" weight. Human bodies vary wildly in bone density, muscle mass, and fat distribution. That is why our calculator also provides a Healthy BMI Weight Range. As long as your actual weight falls within this range (which corresponds to a Body Mass Index of 18.5 to 24.9), you are statistically at a lower risk for weight-related health conditions.
No. IBW formulas and BMI calculations do not account for body composition (the ratio of fat to muscle). Because muscle tissue is much denser and heavier than fat, a perfectly healthy bodybuilder or athlete will often be classified as "overweight" by these formulas. If you are highly muscular, rely on body fat percentage rather than the scale.
The Devine Formula was created in 1974 by Dr. Ben Devine to allow doctors to calculate the clearance of specific drugs in obese patients. It quickly became the most widely used formula on the internet for determining ideal weight because of its simplicity and general accuracy for the average adult.
Interestingly, none of the standard clinical IBW formulas include age as a variable. While it is true that human metabolism slows down and muscle mass naturally decreases as we get older, a healthy weight for a 25-year-old is medically the same healthy weight for a 65-year-old of the same height.
