What is the U.S. Navy Body Fat Calculator?

The U.S. Navy developed a widely respected mathematical formula to estimate body fat percentage using simple circumference tape measurements. Because muscle is denser than fat, analyzing the ratio between your height, neck, and waist (and hips for women) provides a highly accurate estimate of your body composition without needing expensive DEXA scans or water-displacement tests.

Why Calculate Lean Body Mass?

Your scale weight doesn't tell the whole story. If you step on the scale and see that you lost 2 lbs, you might have lost fat, or you might have lost muscle. By tracking your Body Fat Percentage and Lean Body Mass over time, you can ensure that your workout and diet routines are actually burning fat while preserving your hard-earned muscle.

Ideal Body Fat Percentage Chart

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) categorizes body fat percentages to help individuals set healthy fitness goals. Because women naturally carry more essential fat for reproductive and hormonal health, their target percentages are higher than men's.

Category Men Women
Essential Fat 2% - 5% 10% - 13%
Athletes 6% - 13% 14% - 20%
Fitness 14% - 17% 21% - 24%
Average (Acceptable) 18% - 24% 25% - 31%
Obese 25% or higher 32% or higher

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How accurate is the U.S. Navy method?

The U.S. Navy formula is considered one of the most accurate estimation methods available outside of a clinical setting. It is generally accurate within 3% to 4% of your true body fat. The most important factor is consistency: always use the same measuring tape, measure at the same time of day (preferably morning), and pull the tape snug but not tight.

Why do women have to measure their hips?

Men and women store fat differently due to genetics and hormones. Men typically store excess body fat viscerally around the abdomen (waist). Women typically store excess subcutaneous fat around the gluteofemoral region (hips and thighs). The formula accounts for these biological differences to maintain accuracy.

Can I have 0% body fat?

No. "Essential fat" is the minimum amount of fat necessary for basic physical and physiological health, protecting your internal organs and regulating hormones. Dropping below 2% for men or 10% for women is extremely dangerous and can lead to organ failure.
